Dorothy Hinshaw Patent holds a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of California, Berkeley. She is the recipient of the Washington Post--Children's Book Guild Nonfiction Award for her body of work, which includes more than 130 books for children and young adults on subjects ranging from biodiversity to the spirit bear. Plains Indians And Their Horses

The Horse and the Plains Indians: A Powerful Partnership
This book traces The evolution of American Indians from the era of using dogs as pack animals for thousands of years before the Spanish invasion when Hernando Cortes brought over the first horses in 1519. Before that the native Americans even hunted their staple, buffalo on foot, which was a dangerous way of securing meat, the skin/fur for blankets, and tools from the bones and horns, and using every single part of the body of the buffalo for something. The Buffalo were their traveling supermarkets. Once the horse arrived. The Spanish banned the natives from use of horses, but soon through observance the Indians learned how to ride and began stealing the horses. In 1680 the Indians revolted and drove the Spaniards from New Mexico. Soon horses were migrating north farther and before long they were available to almost all of the Indians in America. Once the Indians became expert, they proved to be amazingly gifted as mounted hunters and warriors, shooting buffalo and enemies with bow and arrows and later rifles from horseback. That is as far as I can tell you about the content, enough, I think for you to determine if it is a good buy for children of the designated age group.
The book is packed with the adventurous lives of the plains Indians, and the amazing bond between they and their horses. The book is well illustrated with photo's and artwork and there are about 95 pages of art, photos and text. It is especially written for ages 9-12/grades 4-6, and traces American native history beginning mostly just before the era of the horse to to modern times. There are eight chapters which go from living in the literal dog days right on through to the Indians and their horses of today. It is good reading for the age group intended and children will love the photos from the beginning of the era of the first photographers out west, to the ancient Indian art, to modern paintings. I think children, especially those with any interest in western history will love this book. Since I was provided with an Uncorrected Proof provided by Amazon and the publishers, (a review copy), only the front and back covers are in color and the many interior photos and paintings are in black and white. However, judging by the quality of the front cover photo, the book, when in production will have fine color prints of most of the art and photography along with some of the old black and white photos. Altogether, I liked the book and its pace for the age and grade bracket selected as the target readership.
I give the book 5 stars on the Star system used here on Amazon.

Interesting, Informative Overview ...

Dorothy Hinshaw Patent's book, "The Horse and the Plains Indians," contains an interesting, informative text. It is chocked full of pictures and photographs that enhance the written information; it also highlights a significant aspect of American history. However, there were several items contained in the Advanced Reader's Copy I received for review that were troubling. These caused me to rate it as a 4-star book.
Editing of the ARC seems to be lacking. While "The Horse and the Plains Indians" prologue set the tone for its primary focus, chapter 1 contained a section titled "Helpful Dogs." That portion interrupts the flow of the subject matter narrative and seems misplaced as located. It might have worked advantageously as a preface or as the first section of Chapter 1.
In "The Horse and the Plains Indians," Chapter 5 deals with the decorative painting of horses and the gear Indians created for their animals. The third sentence states a few women became warriors and were treated as men. However, it is the only sentence in the chapter dealing with women; an expanded narrative would enhance that point.
Chapter 7 deals with the forced transition of Native Americans into the white man's world. In the section "Richard Pratt and the Carlisle School," one sentence deals with the building of "...wooden barracks for themselves in the fresh ocean air..." As written, it sounds as if the wooden barracks floated above the earth's surface; careful editing should have corrected this absurdity. Dorothy Hinshaw Patent's work deserves better.
Dorothy Hinshaw Patent obviously respects Native Americans and their role in America's history. Chapter 8, "Indians and Horses Today," added nothing to "The Horse and the Plains Indians." It could be omitted without detriment to the overall scope of the work.
Overall, Dorothy Hinshaw Patent has given readers an interesting, informative overview with her work "The Horse and the Plains Indian."

Beautiful book

This book is a beautiful and honest portrayal of the relationship between the Plains Indians and horses. Having grown up in ND, I recognized many of the stories, places, and events described in this book, but I appreciated how simply and straightforward this book presented the information. At times soaring and at other times tragic, the stories of the relationships between Plains Indians and European Americans makes for fascinating reading, and this is a good book to introduce that story to young readers. (Unfortunately not yet for my daughter, who is only 3. The stories are a bit too old for her. Hopefully soon, though.)
