About the Author
Yukiko Abe Hatasa received her Ph.D. in linguistics in 1992 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has taught all levels of Japanese for over twenty-five years, and has worked on curriculum development and teacher training in five major institutions in the US, Australia, and Japan. She is known nationwide as one of the premier Japanese methodologists in the US and Japan. She is currently a professor of Japanese pedagogy at Hiroshima University.
Kazumi Hatasa received his Ph.D. in education in 1989 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently a professor at Purdue University and Director of the Japanese School at Middlebury College. He is recognized internationally for his work in software development for the Japanese language and distributes most of his work as freeware over the Internet.
Seiichi Makino received his Ph.D. in linguistics in 1968 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is an internationally prominent Japanese linguist and scholar who is recognized throughout the world for his scholarship and for his many publications. Before beginning his tenure at Princeton University in 1991, he taught Japanese language, linguistics, and culture at the University of Illinois while training lower division language coordinators. He is an experienced ACTFL oral proficiency trainer in Japanese and frequently trains Japanese instructors internationally in proficiency-oriented instruction and in the administration of the Oral Proficiency Interview. Professor Makino has been the Academic Director of the Japanese Pedagogy M.A. Summer Program at Columbia University since 1996. He also directs the Princeton-in-Ishikawa Summer Program. In 2014, the Japanese government honored Dr. Seiichi Makino with a decoration: The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, for his outstanding contributions in the mutual academic exchanges between Japan and the United States and the development of Japanese language education.

Buy only if you have to

This book is very overpriced for an average at best textbook with a handful of typos in each chapter.
The audio is a complete ripoff sold separately and yet absolutely required for using the book.
The SAM book is also overpriced but necessary so overall you are paying 200+ for all the audio and books, which given their quality is hard to justify.
The good thing about the book is its print quality (however it lacks a hardcover and is quite easily damaged) and that's about it.
The organization of each chapter is fragmented, out of focus and the grammatical parts lack consistency. Japanese at this level isn't too difficult to learn, but the authors should really try better than this.
I bought this book only because our teacher requires it. I think she made a wrong choice.

Extortion. Terrible Textbook

The Nakama series of textbooks (Nakama I&II) are some of the worst cases of textbook extortion. Nakama I, for example, is priced at $135(and this is at Amazon's reduced price)! One could perhaps forgive such exorbitant prices if the textbook actually succeeded in its goals, right? Well I'm sad to inform students who have to purchase this ridiculously priced textbook that Nakama (1 and 2) fail at giving meaningful Japanese language instruction. Grammar points are presented in a very sparse and rudimentary fashion and exercises range from being boring to tedious. The vocabulary choices are also strange, comprised of mostly irrelevant and infrequent words. A teacher will of course fill in the gaps here and there but courses are taught around the textbook so you will be forced to rely on Nakama to complete class assignments/exercises. One last caveat, this book will do little to adequately prepare you for third-year Japanese. Third-year JPN typically stresses more reading but Nakama seldom incorporates reading (a teacher might fill this shortcoming, though). Frankly, I just do not see the point of using Nakama since it offers very little instruction or resource. I expect a textbook to be a reference for what I learn in-class but Nakama does not even succeed at this. Please avoid purchasing this book, especially at the present price.
*I personally refused to buy Nakama 2 after using a library copy for a week. Instead I resorted to sharing a friend's book in-class and copying pages to complete assignments. Consider doing the same.

If you have a choice, don't get this book.

This book looks like its great. It's set up strikingly similar to Genki. However, without any of the soul and teaching methods of Genki. With Genki you could, if you were sharp enough, allow the text to teach you. Nakama almost requires you to have outside instruction. The book has a sentences or two of the new grammar, and few vague CASUAL examples, then all the practice problems are -masu form. I have to use this text book at Purdue because one of the authors works there. If you have the choice and you're self-teaching. Skip this book. I mean its better than Japanese for Busy People. Also, this text book does teach a lot more Kanji than Genki. But, its my opinion too much stress is placed on learning Kanji. What's the point of being able to read if you can't speak in proper grammar?
