Kazdin, director of the Yale Parenting Center and Conduct Clinic as well as president of the American Psychological Association, claims his method works with no pills, no therapy and no contest of wills. Instead, Kazdin uses a practical, science-based method of dealing with behavioral problems in children that relies on positive reinforcement and a reward system. Kazdin doesn't dwell on the scientific research (it seems the reader must trust him on this), though he claims his method works about 80% of the time with serious problems and therefore should have even greater success with everyday behavior glitches. He outlines a plan to help parents focus on the positive opposite (in other words, what they want the child to do) and then takes them step-by-step through a process of praise and reward. Though Kazdin's approach seems complicated at first, his easygoing and often humorous tone gently guides readers through an array of problem scenarios, including bedtime, tantrums, grocery shopping with a younger child, getting ready for the school day and homework. About the Author
Alan E. Kazdin, Ph.D., is the John M. Musser Professor of Psychology and Child Psychiatry at Yale University and Director of the Yale Parenting Center. His work on parenting and childrearing has been featured on NPR, PBS, the BBC, and he has appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, ABC News, 20/20, and Dr. Phil. He frequently lectures to parents, educators, and business groups interested in learning the latest research and techniques of childrearing.

A Revolutionary book for me

This book has changed the lives of me and my children permanently. I only wish Alan Kazdin hadn't taken so long to write it! He was very busy doing good work, though, and obviously taking good notes so that he could pass it on to all of us.

We have been using Kazdin's Method for 2 weeks now and I am amazed by the results. Our morning routine of getting ready for school and out the door needed a serious overhaul. We hit rockbottom one morning that ended in a lot of yelling and I knew I needed to do something drastically different. My 2 boys(6 and 9) are now out of bed right when their alarm goes off at 6:30 am, dressed and downstairs for breakfast even before I can get it ready. They then get up promptly from the table, brush teeth and hair and have their backpacks ready to go for the carpool a full 15 mins. before they need to be. My 6-yr. old came down one morning and said, "You know Mommy, now we have so much extra time that I think we should make our beds before we go too." I was nearly too stunned to talk! They do all of this so that they can get points and bonus points to go to the library, stay up an extra 15 mins., get a small gift certificate ($5) for a store, etc. Kazdin makes sure you get the all important details right, however, before you implement such a program. You have to get it all right or it won't work! But it isn't hard and I really enjoy using the program and helping the kids cash in their rewards.

This book can help with some serious defiance/behavior issues, but I wish that it was aimed more at just general parenting too. I think all parents can use ideas when the going gets tough. I know that's when I'm at my worst. Now I feel prepared. It is important to note that Kazdin mentions what to do in situations where the behavior is severe but doesn't happen very often (low-rate behavior). I have tried his method for that also with absolute success. I'm so impressed and wish that he could find a way to implement this in a school setting for "problem kids" with behaviors that need to change.

I can't say enough good things about this book and Alan Kazdin. He will change the way children are raised and disciplined and all with very positive results.

I use this in my practice...

Alan Kazdin is one of a half-dozen psychologists who have devoted their lives to research and treatment of problem children. This book has been a godsend to dozens of parents I see in my clinical practice. In fact, I buy it in quantity, stock it in my office, and sell it to them AT COST so they can refer to it at home. I have gotten very good feedback.

Who WOULD benefit from this book? The answer is in the title: parents of DEFIANT children. These are children who are cognitively normal, not involved in crime or criminal threat groups, and not addicted to drugs, yet are defiant, argumentative, disobedient, and generally tiresome around the house. For the millions of parents who have ended up with children they just don't like, this book contains the best parenting advice available.

Some children have special problems, such as autistic-spectrum disorders, ADHD, sensory integration disorder, and the like. The bottom line is, any child who does not respond positively to the program in this book (fully implemented, not attempted halfway or half-heartedly) should be taken for a psychological evaluation to determine what factors play into the discipline problems other than parenting practices. For example, ADHD can't be parented away, but if it is PROPERLY medicated, then the remaining behavior problems can be parented away using the principles in this book or similar books.

For children with attention problems I recommend and use Russell Barkley's books on the defiant child and defiant teen, as Barkley has specialized in working with this population. For children with conduct disorder, there's almost no hope of success unless the parents work with a psychologist who is trained in the behavior protocols designed specifically for conduct-disordered children -- and even these may be insufficient. A parent with a complex problem such as this should never just buy a book and try to treat the problem at home, any more than they would buy a home surgical guide and take out their own child's appendix.

Bottom line: if your child is driving you nuts, but has no obvious really serious problems (no probation record, can pay attention in class, and such), this book is an excellent resource. Buy it, read it, and apply it. If it doesn't work, find a psychologist who specializes in behavior problems in children, who knows Barkley's and Kazdin's work, and who is familiar with diagnosis and treatment of a variety of childhood disorders -- NOT a psychologist who will do play therapy or just talk to the kid, but one who follows specific treatment protocols for serious behavior problems. If you can't find one, either go through the website for the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy, or the American Board for Clinical and Child Psychology, [...] They will help you find someone who specializes in this challenging domain.

Finally!

My first child is an "easy" child, but my second child MORE than makes up for it. I have struggled for years to try to "tame" her somehow. I've read dozens of parenting books and even tried the "supernanny" methods, and NOTHING has worked on my child. Timeouts, losing priveleges, even taking everything out of her room, yelling, spanking, you name it we've tried it, nothing has had any effect on her behavior at all. I am so relieved to finally find a parenting book that explains why none of those methods, and why punishment in general do not work to change behavior (except temporarily). This book explains what does work, and he lays it all out in excruciating detail so you basically can't go wrong. When I got this book in the mail, I sat down and read it in one evening - it is a very easy read and has lots of good example stories. I had to go back to some sections when I actually began to implement the method to look up certain details, but the book is very well organized so it was easy to find what I was looking for. The main thing about his method is positive reinforcement - yes everybody knows that - but this book explains how to do positive reinforcement correctly so that it actually works! I wish I had read this book years ago because it has made me and my family so much happier. I highly, highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Yukiko Abe Hatasa received her Ph.D. in linguistics in 1992 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has taught all levels of Japanese for over twenty-five years, and has worked on curriculum development and teacher training in five major institutions in the US, Australia, and Japan. She is known nationwide as one of the premier Japanese methodologists in the US and Japan. She is currently a professor of Japanese pedagogy at Hiroshima University.

Kazumi Hatasa received his Ph.D. in education in 1989 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently a professor at Purdue University and Director of the Japanese School at Middlebury College. He is recognized internationally for his work in software development for the Japanese language and distributes most of his work as freeware over the Internet.

Seiichi Makino received his Ph.D. in linguistics in 1968 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is an internationally prominent Japanese linguist and scholar who is recognized throughout the world for his scholarship and for his many publications. Before beginning his tenure at Princeton University in 1991, he taught Japanese language, linguistics, and culture at the University of Illinois while training lower division language coordinators. He is an experienced ACTFL oral proficiency trainer in Japanese and frequently trains Japanese instructors internationally in proficiency-oriented instruction and in the administration of the Oral Proficiency Interview. Professor Makino has been the Academic Director of the Japanese Pedagogy M.A. Summer Program at Columbia University since 1996. He also directs the Princeton-in-Ishikawa Summer Program. In 2014, the Japanese government honored Dr. Seiichi Makino with a decoration: The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, for his outstanding contributions in the mutual academic exchanges between Japan and the United States and the development of Japanese language education.

Excellent for self studying

I am currently enrolled in Japanese 1312 at my school, and we are at the end of the beginner's level on our way to intermediate. This is the textbook that we have been using for the past year, and I must say, as someone trying to learn japanese, this book delivers. You will learn a lot of vocabulary that is essential to the language, and its a great book to learn from when outside the classroom. I want to also mention, there are very minor spelling or sentence structure mistakes with regard to the english, I think there was a better way to word some of the sentences for learning purposes, but it is not much of a hinderance, granted you are learning the vocabulary. The book moves you at a good pace and you will be able to learn a wealth of vocab, grammar, structure, and some culture. Also, you will notice that this is 1b, which is extension of 1a. In my opinion, you should buy the bigger version which includes 1a and 1b, since it all follows the same format and it will be easier to reference the information. All in all, definitely deserves a 4/5.

Decent textbook, but need a professor to further explain the grammar

This would be the 3rd Japanese textbook I've used. I can say it isn't my favorite.

There are many errors in the textbook and it is oddly organized.

You learn about family, food, shopping in the Nakama 1B, but shouldn't you be learning that in 1A? Those seem like essential things to learn. The vocab is first grouped alphabetically, then grouped by subject. There is good grammar, but it is scarcely explained. You need a professor/teacher to go over it.

Good textbook, but I feel like it lacked some ...

Good textbook, but I feel like it lacked some deeper instruction that had to be supplemented with an instructor. Paired with my class t's wonderful, but I'm not sure I would be able to take the same knowledge away from it if I were just reading it by itself. For what it does have though, the explanations are helpful and straightforward.

Lehrer weaves back and forth between art and science in eight graceful portraits of artists (mostly writers, along with a chef, a painter, and a composer) who understood, better at times than atomizing scientists, that truth can begin with "what reality feels like." With impressively clear prose, Lehrer explores the oft-overlooked places in literary history where novelists, poets and the occasional cookbook writer predicted scientific breakthroughs with their artistic insights. The 25-year-old Columbia graduate draws from his diverse background in lab work, science writing and fine cuisine to explain how Cézanne anticipated breakthroughs in the understanding of human sight, how Walt Whitman intuited the biological basis of thoughts and, in the title essay, how Proust penetrated the mysteries of memory by immersing himself in childhood recollections. Lehrer's writing peaks in the essay about Auguste Escoffier, the chef who essentially invented modern French cooking. The author's obvious zeal for the subject of food preparation leads him into enjoyable discussions of the creation of MSG and the decidedly unappetizing history of 18th- and 19th-century culinary arts. Occasionally, the science prose risks becoming exceedingly dry (as in the enthusiastic section detailing the work of Lehrer's former employer, neuroscientist Kausik Si), but the hard science is usually tempered by Lehrer's deft way with anecdote and example. Jonah Lehrer, a Rhodes scholar working in the lab of a Nobel Prize–winning neuroscientist, was participating in experiments on the nature of memory while reading Proust’s Swann’s Way. He was amazed to find that the author had predicted his scientific findings nearly a century earlier. This epiphany inspired Lehrer to reexamine other great works of art. This highly readable book generally engaged and enlightened critics; Lehrer writes competently despite his "graduate-student earnestness" (Cleveland Plain Dealer). A few critics felt that some conclusions were strained and some generalizations did a disservice to the very fields they were meant to illuminate; however, most considered Lehrer’s arguments compelling and persuasive. If not all critics bought Lehrer’s claims, his book nonetheless "marks the arrival of an important new thinker" (Los Angeles Times).

A good analysis of the modern literature.

The author is able to entry in the soul of Proust, Cézanne, Withman, Eliot not only for the greatness in the art and literature, but also for their visions by a psychological point of view. In those men the strongness of their art was united to a particular study of the human life. This analysis goes in the deep levels of the mind, so we can retain this context particularly important for a knowledge of the modern times. The correlations of those different aspects is interesting, so we can see the narrow relation between the work of Leherand and his teacher, Kandel.

Art and "Science"

This book is a series of essays about how the work certain artists (Walt Whitman, George Eliot, Paul Cezanne, et al.) precurse the modern findings of neuroscience. At the bottom of the books themes is the idea that art reaches the "self" of people, their character, their decision making, their essential being, while science explains what physical things are going on. Science can explain how things work, but it can't cross the line to get at how people have a sense of themselves and how their deeper emotions are expressed through paintings, music, literature, and even cuisine. It's an interesting book, but not a knockout. But thanks to it, I am better able to understand the buzz behind works by Cezanne and Virginia Woolf.

THE ARTS AND SENSES OF NEUROSCIENCE

I was fascinated by the title, Proust Was a Neuroscientist, and have not been disappointed. In this, my first reading of Jonah Lehrer's work, I've become eager to find more of his writing. (As Jonah he swims deep; as Lehrer he is a true learner and teacher!).

Each of the chapters (Whitman, Escoffier, Cezanne, Stravinsky,
Gertrude Stein, Virginia Wolff, etal) brings the reader to confront the neuroscience of our several senses. While music, art, cuisine, and literature are well explored, I found myself wanting to read Lehrer's description of some fine athlete and the neuroscience of physical coordination excellence.

There are several illustrations in this book, some of which were, in their original, in color. They suffer by having been produced in black & white. Those, particularly one by Cezanne, should not have been printed.

As I read of the artistic antecedents of neurological discoveries I
could not help but wonder what light future neuroscience might shed on some of the same, and some current producers in various arts.
