About the Author
Paul Lauter is the Smith Professor of Literature at Trinity College. He has served as president of the American Studies Association and is a major figure in the revision of the American literary canon.

Richard Yarborough is Professor of English and African American Studies at the University of California-Los Angeles. His work focuses on African American literature and on the construction of race in U.S. culture. He directs the University Press of New England's Library of Black Literature series.

John Alberti teaches at Northern Kentucky University and has a Ph.D. in American literature from UCLA. His main area of research is multicultural American literature and culture.

Mary Pat Brady teaches U.S. Literature. She has written extensively on contemporary U.S. Latino literature.

Dr. Bryer is an expert on F. Scott Fitzgerald and is president of the International F. Scott Fitzgerald Society. He was an editor of DEAR SCOTT, DEAREST ZELDA: THE LOVE LETTERS OF F. SCOTT AND ZELDA FITZGERALD (Macmillan).

Bought new, looked used.

This book was in decent condition but not a new looking copy. It's cover and a large number of pages were folded over and some of the finish was rubbed off of the spine. The packaging, a small cardboard box, had obviously been handled with heavy hands, which is not the seller's fault, but the book itself was not packaged properly. I would recommend buying this anthology elsewhere, but it can be difficult to find.

I was skiptical at first, but when the book finally arrived to me, i was happy with what i saw. The book was in great condition. The only problem i had was how long it took for the book to get to me, and i hope Amazon will do something about that. I look forward to buying more books from you!

A lot of the usual suspects plus some unexpected but lovely choices, including many ethnic American literature selections. Some of the focused sections are a stroke a genius. Great collection! Highly recommended for teachers and students.

About the Author
  Du Bose Heyward (1885-1940) was the author of several books, including the critically acclaimed novel Porgy, which was the basis for Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Marjorie Flack (1897-1958) was an author and illustrator of many children’s books, including The Story About Ping and The Boats on the River, which received a Caldecott Honor in 1947.

This is the most powerful book I have ever read.
The boastful jackrabbits, the aristocratic snobby rabbits, and the male rabbits who laugh when little country bunny tells them that she will grow up to become to be one of the revered Easter Bunnies - are all proven wrong.
Little country bunny grows up, has children, and through the pure goodness of her heart and common sense catches the eye of the Wise Old Grandfather bunny.
Ta-da! He asks her to be an Easter Bunny! After trials and tribulations, her determination, caring, and perseverence carry her through, and she is exalted beyond her dreams by Grandfather Bunny. She is wise, and nice, and very humble.
I love this story because is beautifully written and teaches that those with good and kind hearts, who work hard and persevere, will triumph. Being rich, big, high-born, young, male, does not matter where it really counts - all that matters is what is in your heart.
I first read this as a minority child growing up in a rural community. Now I am a professional in a large city. This book made a difference for me.

Through a Six-Year-Old's Mind

I was born in 1940. This book was read to me once in first grade. I remembered not only the story, but the beautiful illustrations. Twenty years later I called my first grade teacher to ask for the book title so I could read it to my children. "The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes," she had remembered. As I read this to my children, I saw my life had been influenced by this wonderful story. Dubose Heyward wrote one book in 1939. He wrote to tell young females that they can grow up to follow their dreams and have a family. That they can get past social expectations, and past the people who aren't cheering them on, and that we all have a special destiny if we trust ourselves enough to persist against the odds which then sets the example for our children to do the same.

A surprisingly modernist book from 1939

DuBose Heyward's 1939 classic, "The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes," is surprisingly modernist given the time period in which it was written. When so much of the world was (and is) focused on heroes and men in general, what a gentle and lovely surprise to come across a book which celebrates the rabbit--a lady rabbit!--who becomes the Easter bunny.
With elements of Aesop peeping in and out of the text (not the least of which includes the fable of the tortoise and the hare), Heyward manages to make a rabbit with 21 little children sound not only sane, but brilliant. The Country Bunny (or Little Cottontail Mother, as she is called throughout) gives her children each small chores to keep them busy, contribute to the overall quality of their shared family life, and make them feel like valued members of the group. They grow up to be sweet, cheerful, polite, and industrious bunnies, and the Country Bunny uses their fine breeding to great effect to achieve an audition for the role of Easter Bunny.
Heyward's text is inimitably enriched by the sweet pictures of artist Marjorie Flack. The bunnies are plush and adorable, the scenery idyllic, and the colors bright as Technicolor. This is a trip down Memory Lane, even for those who didn't grow up with the book, and a future memory-maker for any child who loves Easter and Easter bunnies.

About the Author
Dr. Ron Larson is a professor of mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught since 1970. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado and is considered the pioneer of using multimedia to enhance the learning of mathematics, having authored over 30 software titles since 1990. Dr. Larson conducts numerous seminars and in-service workshops for math educators around the country about using computer technology as an instructional tool and motivational aid. He is the recipient of the 2013 Text and Academic Authors Association Award for CALCULUS, the 2012 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: AN APPLIED APPROACH, the 2011 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for PRECALCULUS: REAL MATHEMATICS, REAL PEOPLE, and the 1996 Text and Academic Authors Association TEXTY Award for INTERACTIVE CALCULUS (a complete text on CD-ROM that was the first mainstream college textbook to be offered on the Internet). Dr. Larson authors numerous textbooks including the best-selling Calculus series published by Cengage Learning.

Anne Hodgkins received her Ed.D. in higher education from Texas A&M University at Commerce in 1990. She has taught at the secondary, community college and university levels. She currently teaches at Phoenix College in Phoenix, Arizona. She especially enjoys teaching intermediate and college algebra as well as calculus. Her interests include math education and research in mathematics teaching strategies.

The book was used obviously and was in good quality and came in a decent box. There are writings on it and I do wish I was warned about "Math LAB" written on the sides. Other than that, the book was in good condition and was what I expected.

Grade 3-6 An introduction to the sometimes confusing world of homographswords that are spelled alike, but are pronounced differently and have different meanings. Using the general pattern of riddle and accompanying illustration, Terban leads readers through a variety of homographs that may or may not be encountered by young readers. The book is divided into five sections which explore the various types of homographs. Answers are provided upside down in a box at the bottom of each page. They are also included in a separate listing along with a pronunciation guide at the end of each chapter. The format of the book appears to be designed for readers in grades three and four. However, despite good textual organization and entertaining and helpful illustrations showing animals enacting the homographs as clues, some homographs may be much too difficult for that age group, and the format seems too young for older students. About the Author
Paul Lauter is the Smith Professor of Literature at Trinity College. He has served as president of the American Studies Association and is a major figure in the revision of the American literary canon.

Richard Yarborough is Professor of English and African American Studies at the University of California-Los Angeles. His work focuses on African American literature and on the construction of race in U.S. culture. He directs the University Press of New England's Library of Black Literature series.

John Alberti teaches at Northern Kentucky University and has a Ph.D. in American literature from UCLA. His main area of research is multicultural American literature and culture.

Mary Pat Brady teaches U.S. Literature. She has written extensively on contemporary U.S. Latino literature.

Dr. Bryer is an expert on F. Scott Fitzgerald and is president of the International F. Scott Fitzgerald Society. He was an editor of DEAR SCOTT, DEAREST ZELDA: THE LOVE LETTERS OF F. SCOTT AND ZELDA FITZGERALD (Macmillan).

I got the book two days later than I was supposed to. That's is not even the problem because I get that it happens sometimes. The problem is that it was supposed to be 3 volumes meaning that I was supposed to get 3 book and I only got one of them.

About the Author
Ana C. Jarvis, a native of Paraguay, was born in Asuncion and attended school in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She received her Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of California, Riverside, in 1973. Dr. Jarvis retired from Chandler-Gilbert Community College after a long and distinguished career. Prior to CGCC, she taught at Mesa Community College; the University of California, Riverside; San Bernardino Valley College; Brigham Young University; and Riverside City College. In addition to authoring numerous Spanish textbooks, she has published several short stories in Spanish. In 1988, she was chosen as "Faculty Member of the Year" at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

Raquel Lebredo was born in Camaguey, Cuba. She attended school in Havana and later enrolled at the University of Havana, where she received a Ph.D. in Education. She was subsequently employed as an elementary school principal, and taught literature and language at a preparatory school in Havana. She moved to the United States after living in Spain for a period of time. Dr. Lebredo was awarded a Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of California, Riverside. Since then, she has taught Spanish at Claremont Graduate School, Crafton Hills College, the University of Redlands, and California Baptist University, and has authored several Spanish textbooks. In 1985, she was chosen as "Faculty Member of the Year" by the student body at California Baptist University, and in 1991 she received a YWCA "Women of Achievement" award.

Francisco Mena-Ayllon, a native of Madrid, Spain, received his Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of California, Riverside, in 1973. He has taught Spanish language and literature courses at the University of California, Riverside; Oberlin College; California State University, Chico; the University of Redlands; and Crafton Hills College. In addition to authoring numerous Spanish textbooks in the United States, he has published a book about Federico Garcia Lorca and several volumes of his own poetry. His poetry has been published in Spain, Latin America, and the United States. His work has also been included in several anthologies of contemporary Spanish poets, and he is listed in Quien es Quien en las Letras Espanolas, 1978 (Who's Who in Spanish Letters), as an important contributor to contemporary Spanish literature. Professor Mena-Ayllon is now retired.

Como se dice textbook

This is a great textbook for begining Spanish. It contains tidbits of cultural information throught the book. My only complaint is the Web Site Access. Though you have access to the site's basic conent(which is considerable)you must purchase a key to have full access.

Not what the Teacher Ordered

This book oddly enough was not formatted in a way similar to other books,with same edition and code numbers and was also missing a "key card" which was needed to access important info needed for the class.We ended up donating the book so it could be used as a resource book by other students at my daughters high school.We then had to purchase the book with the key card from the schools bookstore.I think that if a book is to be sold that requires an active key card that that should be a stated fact so the buyer can beware.I had no idea that books required keycards as this is a fairly new practice.The keycard if bought seperately cost nearly as much as the book.

Possibly the best Spanish textbook I have used so far

I've been studying Spanish intensively for the past two years and find this particular text to be the best I have used so far. The focus is on conversation rather than just grammar, the exercises are effective, the mix of exercises is entertaining, the explanations and examples are very clear, the exposures to Latin American literature and geography are informative, and even the illustrations contribute to making this an interesting and useful text.
