Grade 6-9-In grand storytelling style, the author continues his series with Sarah, an orphaned teenager who is on a quest for revenge when she encounters Queen Guinevere and Sir Kai. After Kai catches Sarah trying to steal his sword, he gives her a special sword made for his son and teaches her how to use it. When the evil Sir Meliagant kidnaps Guinevere and wounds Kai, Sarah searches for a way to help them. A crone leads her to Camelot where she meets King Arthur, and she goes with Sir Gawain and his squire to rescue Kai and Guinevere. On the road, they encounter trickery, danger, and many characters and plot twists. Sarah gets her revenge, but it is not sweet, and this well-drawn character eventually finds strength and peace within herself. This imaginative novel doesn't take itself too seriously, and yet Morris manages to make some serious points. In the author's note, he is open about taking liberties with Chretien de Troyes's original story The Knight of the Cart, but, after all, there is no one, true Arthurian legend. Readers looking for page-turning adventure, a strong heroine, and some fun will find it all here.

The novel is driven by a keen sense of justice and lightened by droll wit. A terrific cast of characters energizes the story, which plays out against a colorful, well-developed historical background. So far this year I have only read one book better than this one--and that was 'The Savage Damsel And The Dwarf', by the same author who wrote this, Gerald Morris.

Mr Morris has a true gift for writing. All of his books are good, and I would heartily recommend reading every single one of them. However, it is in his books that star strong, willful female heroines that he really shines. Let's face it, strong women are inspiring and exciting, and unfortunately, also rather too rare in literature, or even in films and television. Girl power is great! (Personally, I think that was why the tv series 'Buffy' was always better than its spinoff 'Angel', because it had more strong, likeable female characters.)

In this novel, young, brave, determined Sarah goes looking for revenge, but ends up finding herself. Her journey is as much about self-discovery as it is a quest for justice, and the outcome is upliftingly beautiful and poignant.

Yes, this book tackles some serious issues, but thankfully, in the skilled hands of Gerald Morris, it is also incredibly witty, entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny! Plus, as always, there's lots of knights in shining armour, exchanging both swordplay and wordplay equally cuttingly.

I only hope that this brilliant author writes more books in this series, because I've read them all now, and I'm going into serious withdrawal...

We fight over who gets to read the next one in the series first!

After reading one book by author Gerald Morris, we were addicted! Now my husband (43), my son (12), and myself (37) are fighting over every book in the Squire's Tales series that we can get our hands on! We bought this book because we heard it was "good literature." We had no idea HOW good until we read it. It is clever, witty, sarcastic, adventurous, and inspirational! My husband laughed so hard he cried! It is a very entertaining retelling of the King Arthur stories and Canterbury Tales, complete with knights, castles, princesses, magic, fairies, herbs with healing powers, and quests! The characters as sassy and full of spunk, and there is a new adventure around every corner. We recommended these books to our local library, some of the librarians read one of the books, and they ended up ordering a bunch of the books from The Squire's Tales series for the library. (This book is the sixth in the series.) It is easy to recommend such a charming and entertaining book!

an EXCELLENT ADVENTURE book by XMMO

This is a great book! It's not as funny as THE SQUIRE'S TALE, but it's more adventure. You see, Sarah witnesses the Queen and Sir Kai's obduction, and she goes for help. Soon she finds herself accompanied by the famous Sir Gawain, his squire, Terence, and searching for the queen and kai. But Sarah's also on a quest of her own, with only a mysterious old crone to help her. This book is filled with ACTION, ADVENTURE, KNIGHTS, ENCHANTMENTS, SUSPENSE, MAGIC, OTHER-WORLDLY-BEINGS, all on a MEDIEVAL back ground! This really is a great read!

Excellent for self-study

I am using Contacts, 7th ed., along with the workbook/lab manual. I also purchased the CD set, which contained 14 CD's with about 40 minutes on each. I have enjoyed these materials immensely. Since I am studying on my own, the CDs have been a key part of my training. This book covers the equivalent of two semesters of college French. The pages are colorful, with many descriptions of contemporary French life. For those who are using it in a classroom setting, many of the exercises creatively get partners to have dialogues. I highly recommend it for self-study, study with a partner or in a classroom.

Not what you think your getting--Check carefully!!

If you are purchasing this for a class, I highly recommend that you purchase the package from the schools bookstore. I tried to purchase all of the "parts" on amazon and because the discriptions are sketchy I ended up spending more trying to get all that I needed for the class than I would have. For instance they split the CD that normally comes with the book seperatly, and they split the SAM CDs from the student manual. When the SAM CDs arrived they had been opened and were missing half the CD's (ordered from Amazon), although Amazon is fixing it with no fuss, the shipping time means that I will not have the CD's in time for class, and I have to HOPE the next ones they send are complete!

The author, a senior editor at the New Republic, is best known for declaring I hate President George W. Bush in 2003. This book traces the roots of his dislike back 30 years, when supply-side economics took over the Republican Party and made cutting taxes the GOP answer to all political and economic questions. American politics has been hijacked by a tiny coterie of right-wing economic extremists, Chait declares, some of them ideological zealots, others merely greedy, a few of them possibly insane. To which he adds, the Republicans' success at defeating the democratic process explains why it has been able to enact its agenda despite a lack of popular support. The rhetoric is inflammatory, but the case is laid out with clarity. Chait claims that traditional Republicans, religious people and social, fiscal and foreign policy conservatives have been cheated as much as liberals, and that unparalleled corruption and ruthless cynicism in Washington and the timidity of nonpartisan media allow the minority to rule. A good place to start

This book is a good place to start to understand the late 20th century's emergence of the conservative movement and it's fortunate partnership with social conservatives and "Reagan Democrats." Chait spells out that the movement's flaws in logic as a radical logic. That means lying is OK because in the conservative universe it's not lying but serving a higher purpose. His exploration is extremely readable, especially of the asymmetric relationship between conservatives who toe the line and liberals who naturally try to compromise.

Telling it Like it is.

This book is a meticulously researched account of how the Republican Party was penetrated and then taken over by radical economic conservatives preaching a counter-intuitive doctrine called "supply-side" economics. The takeover and the assertion of this quack theory into the national debate make for fascinating reading, more detailed than the story I sketched out in my book I Forgot, Honey, Why Are We Democrats? ten years ago.

Chait also does a good job documenting the disarming of the news media as conservatives pulled the old political center to the right. A shortcoming of the book is its thin attention to the Democrats and their failure to press their own understanding of history and economics.

One's interest does wane a little in the latter chapters as the aurthor belabors his points. Altogether, though, a good read for anyone wondering what happened to American politics.

A great book about an important subject

I am reluctant to give 5 stars to any review, but I succumbed to the temptation in this case simply because for what it does this book is just about as good as it gets.

It reminds me somewhat of Paul Krugman's scarily prescient book "Fuzzy Math" that predicted all of the fiscal calamities that followed the enactment of the Bush tax cuts.

Chait's book is similar to Fuzzy Math on two counts: first, it offers a sustained, cogent criticism of Bush economic policy; and second, it is extremely well-written. Chait has an admirable ability to make fairly technical subject matter completely clear to a lay audience. He increases readability even more by sprinkling his prose with a healthy dose of humor. I couldn't put the book down, devouring it in a weekend.

However, The Big Con has a considerably more ambitious scope than Fuzzy Math, which was essentially limited to an analysis of Bush's 2001 tax cuts. The Big Con focuses upon the entire history of supply-side economics, the philosophy that has, as Chait aptly demonstrates, completely captured the Republican party despite the fact that it has virtually no support among professional economists.

If you want to learn something about economic policy while enjoying a thumping good read, I can't recommend a better choice.

When their mother dies, they grieve in different ways. Their father disappears into his misery, Xander gets involved with a crowd that deals in drugs and alcohol, and Zen finds herself resorting to violence as the first solution to dangerous situations. When she gets injured and can no longer teach karate until she has healed in both body and spirit, she struggles with her feelings of helplessness and her inability to get through her sister's ever more hazardous attitude. It only makes things worse when the girls uncover a secret about their mother that has them wondering if they ever really knew her. Zen's narration gives both her actions and her emotions a feeling of immediacy and closeness. Though the ending leaves some questions about Zen's future unanswered, both Xander and the girls' father go through dramatic changes, which Zen chronicles with keen insight. Two sisters who are totally different join together to solve a mystery. After the death of their mother less than a year ago, Zen (Athena) and Xander (Alexandra) are looking for ways to carry on. Their father is hiding out in his new basement bedroom and pretty much ignoring the girls.

Xander is and has always been the wild one, but since their mother's death her behavior has become completely defiant and even dangerous. Zen is worried.

Zen is all about control. Her interest in martial arts is just one example. The discipline, the ceremony, and the rigid standards are perfect for her. The emotional upheaval of losing her mother has her searching for stability.

The girls begin receiving letters and packages from their mother, sent by a mysterious someone. The items arrive on special occasions like Christmas, Mother's Day, and birthdays. When Zen and Xander attempt to discover the identity of the mysterious sender, they stumble across a secret life their mother has hidden for years. Did she have an affair? How long did it last? Was their parents' marriage in jeopardy?

In an effort to uncover the secret, the girls question neighbors, relatives, and even the family lawyer. They are determined to find the answers they seek no matter the consequences.

ZEN & XANDER UNDONE is an excellent addition to any collection of books for teenage girls. Amy Kathleen Ryan takes readers on an emotional ride as her believable characters face the challenge of surviving the loss of their mother and finding a way to move on toward whatever the future might hold. She combines heartbreaking emotions with humor and a bit of fun to capture readers and take them into the lives of Zen and Xander.

Ryan's May release Zen and Xander undone is one novel that packes one hell of an emotion punch. From the book description I anticipated a heart wrenching story of loss for these two girls that becomes their undoing. What I did not anticipate was that the true under lieing storyline of a young girl that is struggling with the loss of everything in her life. Because of the lifestyle and choices of poison it is an immediate concern for the future of Xander the older out of control eighteen year old, but the reader slowly learns that Zen is in more trouble than at first sight. Zen has not only lost her mother, but she is now facing the loss of her sister and her deeply depressed father. This book reminded me a lot of P.S. I Love You, because of the letters that Zen and Xanders mother prepares before her death. This was a careful crafted story line that is deeply emotional, and will pull the reader through by the heart strings. The amount of saddness and despair in the one small book is unreal. I especially felt sad for Xander when it becomes clear that Adam is in love with Xander. It seems as though this character is always being left behind. This is the first novel that I have ever read that has the main character doing all of the talking, but it is mainly about the side characters story. Everything seems to be about Xander, but you discover that under the story Xander feelings show through. The story then takes a definetly turn, to the mystery and mission of their Mother. After having stolen their mothers will records from the lawyer, they find that I may not really know their mother. This turns into a disasterious mission to discover their mothers secrets. Only what they find is that everyone has secrets, and when you don't know all of the details it is easy to make presumptions and judge unfairly; somethings are better left buried. As my first novel by Amy Kathleen Ryan I have to say that I am quite impressed by this authors ability. Such deep feeling is intertwined in her writing that it left me craving more. I look forward to seeing what she can come up with in the future. As for my cover note on this novel it was pretty self explanatory without reading the novel. Mine is the cover previewing two girls one with makeup, jewelry, and looking like shes on the prowl which my guess is Xander; while the other is innocent and sweet I perceived this to be Zen. Not a lot hidden in the cover, but definetly beautiful and will attract a lot of attention.

Great book!

I really liked this book. When I recieved it for review I wasn't really sure how interesting it was going to be. The names of the characters were nice and unique-how many Zens or Xanders can you think of? The two sisters fought as any sisters would, and loved each other underneath the outward tension exactly like siblings do. They were portrayed perfectly.
Xander's volatile nature drags the plot along, and if it weren't for her, there would not be much of a story. It is she that wants to find out about her mom's past and insists on getting involved with the wrong sort of people. Zen is sort of just along for the ride, but fighting to get off and take her sister off with her.
There was something about this book that was missing. I can't say what exactly, but it was lacking a little...Oomph. The extra bit that would make it amazingly memorable. As is, it's better than average.

As I read the chapters I realized that it may be just what I have been looking for. I need something that the students can relate to, not too difficult that it goes over their heads and not too dry. Its strengths are: Readability, science stories making science concepts and teaching ideas accessible to students. Personal reflections of the author woven throughout. Text feels like it was written by someone who has taught science in the classroom. Instructor support much more than most texts give."

About the Author
Janice Koch is Professor Emerita of Education in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Hofstra University, Long Island, New York. She taught general introduction to education courses and elementary, middle, and secondary science methods courses as well as courses for teachers in action research, qualitative research, and gender issues in the classroom. Dr. Koch shares her passion for teaching and learning through presentations as well as through her introduction to education text, TEACH, 2nd Edition (2014, Cengage). Her acclaimed textbook, SCIENCE STORIES, has been used by thousands of pre-service and in-service educators interested in creating meaningful science experiences for their students. She and her husband currently reside in Central Maryland, where she consults on education projects across the country and internationally.

Science Stories is a 'must read' !

Science Stories is a 'must read' for all teachers. As Dr. Koch's prior student, I can tell you firsthand that Dr. Koch is a master of teaching science. She discusses in detail, activity-based learning. Dr. Koch describes in a clear, well-written manner how we are all scientists when we question our everyday happenings. She helps us to reflect on our thinking and to respect our students' inquiries. We can bring out the 'science-self' in all our students and Dr. Koch guides us wonderfully!

A text I keep reaching for....

About a year ago, I used this text in a course I taught as an adjunct. Science Stories was one of the four texts that were required for a "learning-communities" style course that combined the course content for math, science, and technology methods. Since closing the course in May, 2007 (I taught two sections of the science component), I have found myself returning to this one text again and again. Supervisors of student teachers, preservice teachers, and naturalist-educators could use this book as a reference for "science process skills," for questioning levels, and for ideas on "home-made" laboratory equipment constructed from everyday items. What it does not provide are many "cookbook" guides for how to run specific activities. Readers will have to look elsewhere for direct-instruction models and for protocols for guided laboratory activities.

I had to buy this book for a Graduate Teachers program and it has served me well. Even though it is the 2nd edition, it has all the same information as the most recent one, just the chapters are labeled differently. Thank god for this because the recent one is somewhere around $50 more expensive!

This must be the superior introductory text for these two topics. The text starts with an introduction to organic chemistry and uses this introduction to transition to biochemistry. Written for allied health provider's curriculum seemed more understandable than other text books that claim an entry into organic chemistry. Could use some more editing in the biochemistry sections. This action would bring the text up to the outstanding rating its organic chemistry sections have already earned.
