About the Author
Mae M. Ngai, Professor of History and Lung Family Professor of Asian American Studies, is a U.S. legal and political historian interested in questions of immigration, citizenship, and nationalism. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1998 and taught at the University of Chicago before returning to Columbia in 2006. Ngai is author of IMPOSSIBLE SUBJECTS: ILLEGAL ALIENS AND THE MAKING OF MODERN AMERICA (Princeton, 2004) and THE LUCKY ONES: ONE FAMILY AND THE EXTRAORDINARY INVENTION OF CHINESE AMERICA (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2010). Professor Ngai has held fellowships from the Social Science Research Council, NYU Law School, Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton. Ngai has written on immigration history and policy for the Washington Post, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Nation, and the Boston Review. Before becoming a historian Ngai was a labor-union organizer and educator in New York City. She is now working on YELLOW AND GOLD: THE CHINESE MINING DIASPORA, 1848-1908, a study of Chinese goldminers in the nineteenth-century North American West, Australia, and South Africa.

Jon Gjerde died in October 2008. He was Alexander F. and May T. Morrison professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1982. His areas of expertise included nineteenth-century America with particular reference to immigration and religion, and he published some thirty articles on these subjects. He also published FROM PEASANTS TO FARMERS: THE MIGRATION FROM BALESTRAND, NORWAY, TO THE UPPER MIDDLE WEST (1985) and THE MINDS OF THE WEST: THE ETHNOCULTURAL EVOLUTION OF THE RURAL MIDDLE WEST, 1830-1917 (1997), both of which won the Theodore Saloutos Memorial Book Award of the Immigration History Society for the best book in agricultural history.

This book is actually interesting and is helping me understand the reasons for immigration. Even though it is required reading for my class I actually am enjoying the reading and would recommend it to those who just like reading about history and letters of immigrants.

About the Author
For more than 30 years, Dr. Hopper has been involved with Student Success at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. She is a nationally known lecturer and workshop leader on topics such as learning how to learn, learning styles, memory, time management, effective classroom techniques, and using technology in the classroom. She is a frequent guest at the National and Fall Energizer conferences for College Survival and is active in the NADE and CRLA organizations. Carolyn's Study Skills website (http://capone.mtsu.edu/studskl/) has been visited by more than a million people! When asked to describe her teaching style, Carolyn says: "I am first of all enthusiastic about learning how to learn. I get excited about learning and hopefully my students catch the spirit. My classes are a combination of lecture supported by many visuals and hands-on activities. Skills for being successful in college are learned by doing. So, once students understand a concept, my aim for them is to develop the skills by practice and make modification to the skills that will work for them. A student in my class can expect homework due every class period. My style may seem casual and somewhat laid back, but each class is carefully planned with goals and objectives in mind. I am extremely demanding but would like to think that I am patient. I try to make sure that everything we do in class is backed up on the website."

I'm impressed...

...clearly written and to the point, with a wealth of good advice...I particularly like the section on improving memory skills -- it shows an excellent grasp of our current understanding of the memory mechanism...would make an excellent present for anyone on their way to college...and parents should consider reading it in order to help their kids from elementary through high school...although a bit expensive -- 45 bucks for a 320 pages -- I doubt that, in the long run, anyone will regret the investment...

Starting with a 5:30 a.m. wakeup call and working through to the wee hours (with a pause for a restorative midday nap), she explains the complex details behind some of the body's most basic functions. The day is a somewhat arbitrary structure for topics that could be discussed at any time (she holds off on exercise until the late afternoon, for example), but the arrangement is never obtrusive, and Ackerman's prose is inviting. While she doesn't offer a radical new perspective on the human body, she does provide a steady stream of interesting information on things like the tiny hair cells inside the cochlea that enable us to hear even the briefest of noises, and the aphrodisiac allure for women of the odor of men's underarm sweat. Uses "day in the life" format to introduce interesting ideas

This is one many great recent 200 page or so science books which are helpful at introducing the subjects they discuss.

In this case, the subjects treated are sex, food consumption, and sleep and dreams.

With reference to the sexual issues, those who find their curiosity peaked by the issues in this book would be well advised to do follow up reading with such books as Dr. Helen Fisher's Why We Love as well as Matt Ridley's The Red Queen and Jared Diamond's Why is Sex Fun?

As it relates to the sleep research could follow this book up with Andrea Rock's very excellent Mind At Night which follows up some of the points made in this book concerning the essential nature of sleep.

As it relates to food consumption this book was a great primer and for me opened up new vistas of thought about what I had previously thought was just a mundane issue...eating and drinking.

But in the end I guess that's the function of great science writing to make us see the wonder in even supposedly ordinary things.

Or as Confucious once said: "Ordinary thinkers only see the wonder in great things but great thinkers see the wonder in even the ordinary."

Jennifer Ackerman's full title is very catchy and will pull your eye in with interest. According to her bio, Ackerman is an author who writes for National Geographic and The New York Times among other publications. In A Day in the Life of Your Body, Ackerman uses enough scientific wording to be accurate and enlightening while at the same time providing her audience with an easy and engaging read. The book is a journey through those topics she found most interesting. Her interest in writing this book and on the marvelous human body was piqued when she succumbed to the flu. We can all attest to how that nasty little virus will make us wake up and notice every nook and cranny of our bodies, mainly because every part feels like it isn't working at all!

The book is structured with sections and chapters as though the reader is witnessing a 24-hour period of time that an average, healthy body would experience. From awakening to battling mild insomnia and many more biological ticks in between, so much is included in this book. She writes of the differences between "larks" and "owls" and their preferences for when to retire for the night; the affect of coffee on the body and how it works; facts about our senses and the functioning of the synapses in the brain; the feeling of hunger and why the hormones leptin and ghrelin are so very important in the right amounts; digestion and how micro flora can affect weight; that dreaded mid-day slump and the power of napping; stress and how the body handles it-or doesn't; the best time for alcohol and exercise; face recognition; pheromones; the neurobiology of caresses and sex; sickness and the best time of day for taking medicine; the mystery of the ways and whys of sleep. Every reader should be able to find a topic of interest in this book.

Circadian rhythms seem to be a thread recurring throughout the book. The power of the circadian rhythms dominating the behavior and functioning of the body has proven to be mightily overlooked in many societies. And yet they are so very vital to our daily-and nightly-existence. There is a master clock in the brain inside the hypothalamus. The structure resides on both the left and right hemispheres and consists of thousands of neurons. This structure is known as the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN).

"The SCN measures the passage of a twenty-four hour day by producing and using special proteins in a circadian pattern. It controls and organizes the big rhythms of the body so that its sleep functions are optimal at night and its wakeful functions during the day...Though the master clock oversees the body's cyclical rhythms, the genetic timepieces pocketed in the cells of outlying tissues and organs may follow their own routines...to ensure that a particular organ has what it needs when it needs it, and timing its activities according to its own priorities."

Digging deeper into the knowledge of these rhythms we find that they are extremely fine-tuned. The impact of just a small amount of artificial light can disrupt and reset these rhythms. There are reasons for the setting of the sun every day. If we had perpetual light there would be no opportunity for the cascade of hormones and other changes that make the body ready for sleep. It makes one ponder on the magnitude of circadian destruction done by the megacities of the world or by the hours kept by night workers. Sleep is precious. Truly, we would literally die without it.

"Imagine if we could feel the rotation of these intimate circles that drive our bodies. Perhaps this would temper our habit of ticking off digitized minutes and linear hours; perhaps it would restore our childlike experience of time as a revolving ring made of the smaller circumferences of a day. At the very least it might nurture more respect for our natural cyclical rhythms."

An intriguing exploration of the body

This is a really intriguing book that examines how the physiology of the body changes throughout an entire day. The reader learns a lot more about the different cycles that the body undergoes, which dependent on the time of day as well as how to make his or her habits work around and with the cycle of the body to produce healthier benefits.

What I found particularly fascinating was the detailed look at different parts and functions of the body such as digestion and sleep. As I read this book, I came to appreciate the miracle of my body even more, as well as how I can consciously work with it in order maximize the life I'm living. I definitely think that this book offers a lot of exploration for people who wish to work with their bodies on a conscious level.

About the Author
Steve Zumdahl is the author of market-leading textbooks in introductory chemistry, general chemistry, honors-level chemistry, and high school chemistry. Recently retired from his long-time position as Director of Undergraduate Programs at the University of Illinois, he has received numerous awards for his contributions to chemical education. These include the National Catalyst Award in recognition of his contribution to chemical education, the University of Illinois Teaching Award, the UIUC Liberal Arts and Sciences Advising Award, and the School of Chemical Sciences Teaching Award (five times). He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Wheaton College (IL), and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.

Susan A. Zumdahl earned a B.S. and M.A. in Chemistry at California State University--Fullerton. She has taught science and mathematics at all levels, including middle school, high school, community college, and university. She is past director of the Merit Program for Emerging Scholars in Chemistry at the University of Illinois. In addition, she spearheaded the development of a sophisticated web-based electronic homework system for chemistry and is co-author on several chemistry textbooks.

Scamming students

These authors have created a "Custom California" edition to try to limit the resell value by artificially breaking up their textbook market into smaller segments. This is a new despicable practice in the textbook sales arena. Not to mention that they are already on their 8th edition. So you know how long this edition will last. Maybe one or two years before they decide they need to rearrange the chapters to generate additional profits.

Dr. Steven Zumdahl works at the University of Chicago, so I'm sure he is doing much better than most of his minimum wage earning students who are trying to pay for his overpriced chemistry book with little resell value.

Everybody knows that college textbooks use shady market tactics to increase sales. However, the Zumdahls have gone to a new low by creating a "Custom California" edition.

95% makes sense..5% what?

Most of this book is pretty straight forward, but at times, its a little contradictory and unclear. For instance, in Chapter 18 which includes Electrochemistry, sometimes the problems take into account water and sometimes they don't, and they don't address that problem at all so it leaves me frustrated. Sometimes it almost seems like the examples and concepts were taught pretty clearly, but when the problems came around, I was caught off guard by how awkward the questions were and the assumptions some of them had me make.

Avoid the Kindle Edition

I rented the Kindle Edition of this book because it was considerably cheaper than renting the newest edition. What is not mentioned on the product page is that the Kindle Edition is missing several images because of "copyright restrictions"; these are replaced with large gray boxes. Amazon and Cengage should be ashamed of marketing this book without clear warning that it is incomplete. Even worse, textbook rentals are apparently not subject to the usual 7-day return policy for Kindle books, so my money is gone for good. I will probably be buying my Cengage books USED in dead-tree format from here on out.

About the Author
Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

The Best Resource for Observing the Night Sky

Now considered a classic, this is simply the best book ever written and illustrated for observing the night sky. H.A. Rey, who enriched the world with his Curious George books, was an avid amateur astronomer frustrated with the complexity of books on astronomy and stargazing. So, he wrote and illustrated this wonderful book to help excite and educate kids of all ages. I've used "Find the Constellations" to teach the constellations to my children, my grand children, more than 2,000 public school students, and countless scouts (boys and girls) for more than 30 years now. The illustrations are beautiful and easy to apply to real observing under the night sky; the writing is fun and entertaining; and, the stories are interesting and help us remember the key constellations. This book enchants as well as educates. Every school library, regardless of grade levels, should have this updated version. I highly encourage it for every home library as well. And, it is the best resource available for the Boy Scout Astronomy Merit Badge.

Great Constellation Primer!

Find the Constellations is an absolutely joy to read and study. Rey totally gives modern folk, young and old, a challenge in his opening comments: "Simple shepherds 5000 years ago were familiar with the heavens; they knew the stars and constellations--and they could not read or write---so why don't you?" (Page 3) I agree, and I wonder if we have lost something--as a species, for all our technology, in not observing and questioning the night sky.

This book would be an appropriate product for family time and weekend time--sharing and learning together. The illustrations are easy to grasp, and the fonts are big, easily read even for eye glass wearers. Two chatty little characters appear on select pages to add humor, additional information, and / or emphasis to given material.

Great for adults too

I've always wanted to be able to recognize the constellations, but never took the time to wander through complicated star charts. As an adult I have even less time than I did as a kid, but just reading through Rey's book a few times and sitting in the backyard a few minutes a night makes it easy.
Tiny little nuggets of information, like "the dipper is like a saddle!" make things so much easier to recognize.
I recomend this book for any adult (or kid) who's interested in learning the constellations, but doesn't necessarily want to recognize galaxies, or specific stars etc...
