"I have never used the Koch text but will use it next fall for my two sections of science methods with undergraduates. As I read the chapters I realized that it may be just what I have been looking for. I need something that the students can relate to, not too difficult that it goes over their heads and not too dry. Its strengths are: Readability, science stories making science concepts and teaching ideas accessible to students. Personal reflections of the author woven throughout. Text feels like it was written by someone who has taught science in the classroom. Instructor support much more than most texts give."

About the Author
Janice Koch is Professor Emerita of Education in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Hofstra University, Long Island, New York. She taught general introduction to education courses and elementary, middle, and secondary science methods courses as well as courses for teachers in action research, qualitative research, and gender issues in the classroom. Dr. Koch shares her passion for teaching and learning through presentations as well as through her introduction to education text, TEACH, 2nd Edition (2014, Cengage). Her acclaimed textbook, SCIENCE STORIES, has been used by thousands of pre-service and in-service educators interested in creating meaningful science experiences for their students. She and her husband currently reside in Central Maryland, where she consults on education projects across the country and internationally.

Science Stories is a 'must read' !

Science Stories is a 'must read' for all teachers. As Dr. Koch's prior student, I can tell you firsthand that Dr. Koch is a master of teaching science. She discusses in detail, activity-based learning. Dr. Koch describes in a clear, well-written manner how we are all scientists when we question our everyday happenings. She helps us to reflect on our thinking and to respect our students' inquiries. We can bring out the 'science-self' in all our students and Dr. Koch guides us wonderfully!

A text I keep reaching for....

About a year ago, I used this text in a course I taught as an adjunct. Science Stories was one of the four texts that were required for a "learning-communities" style course that combined the course content for math, science, and technology methods. Since closing the course in May, 2007 (I taught two sections of the science component), I have found myself returning to this one text again and again. Supervisors of student teachers, preservice teachers, and naturalist-educators could use this book as a reference for "science process skills," for questioning levels, and for ideas on "home-made" laboratory equipment constructed from everyday items. What it does not provide are many "cookbook" guides for how to run specific activities. Readers will have to look elsewhere for direct-instruction models and for protocols for guided laboratory activities.

Great book

I had to buy this book for a Graduate Teachers program and it has served me well. Even though it is the 2nd edition, it has all the same information as the most recent one, just the chapters are labeled differently. Thank god for this because the recent one is somewhere around $50 more expensive!
