About the Author
Dr. Ron Larson is a professor of mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught since 1970. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado and is considered the pioneer of using multimedia to enhance the learning of mathematics, having authored over 30 software titles since 1990. Dr. Larson conducts numerous seminars and in-service workshops for math educators around the country about using computer technology as an instructional tool and motivational aid. He is the recipient of the 2013 Text and Academic Authors Association Award for CALCULUS, the 2012 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: AN APPLIED APPROACH, the 2011 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for PRECALCULUS: REAL MATHEMATICS, REAL PEOPLE, and the 1996 Text and Academic Authors Association TEXTY Award for INTERACTIVE CALCULUS (a complete text on CD-ROM that was the first mainstream college textbook to be offered on the Internet). Not good for online studies...

I was forced into buying this book for my online Intermediate Algebra class. The first thing that struck me as strange was the cover of the book. Take a look at it. It depicts people diving off buildings in a city... no doubt, plummeting to their deaths. It is very bizarre and one could imagine this is what Algebra has driven many people to do... especially after being forced into using this textbook.

The contents within are really not that good. Even though the book seems to be geared towards online/adult learners, it is anything but easy to understand. The lessons are comprehensive and the pages are cluttered with information. Aside from the primary text, tips boxes, study aids and other such confusing nonsense is scattered all over the pages which tends to lead to fragmented reading. The text is not written in layman terms but in terms that are confusing and seem to make things harder than they really should be.

I realize most people probably don't have a choice in regards to what textbook a class uses, so are these reviews worth anything?? I don't know. Maybe teachers will read them and it will help steer their decision-making. Either way, this book is not that good. I'm sure the concepts are sound, but the presentation and text is confusing and seems to be written in a more difficult way than it needs to be.

When I saw the cover I thought this book would teach me how to fly using algebra. Unfortunately it transpired that I had been mislead. VERY disappointed! Would not recommend.

Preferred other texts to this one (as a student)

As a student, I found this book difficult and uncooperative. Material not presented in lecture was almost impossible to "learn on your own" from the book. My professor would assign a mixed bag of problems from an exercise set, so that we would have the solutions to some and be able to check our own progress. I found that the odd problems (which had corresponding answer keys in the back of the text) were quite simple and followed the structure of the examples used throughout the chapter. The even problems, however, seemed to take a 10-degree leap in difficulty levels with nothing to compare them to. Can't wait to offload this.

Best thing I can say about it - it's hardcover and is a nice size.

Dr. Bruce H. Edwards is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Florida. Professor Edwards received his B.S. in Mathematics from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Dartmouth College. He taught mathematics at a university near Bogotá, Colombia, as a Peace Corps volunteer. While teaching at the University of Florida, Professor Edwards has won many teaching awards, including Teacher of the Year in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Liberal Arts and Sciences Student Council Teacher of the Year, and the University of Florida Honors Program Teacher of the Year. He was selected by the Office of Alumni Affairs to be the Distinguished Alumni Professor for 1991-1993. Professor Edwards has taught a variety of mathematics courses at the University of Florida, from first-year calculus to graduate-level classes in algebra and numerical analysis. He has been a frequent speaker at research conferences and meetings of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. A good book for undergraduate Calculus.

Calculus by Larson,Hostetler, Edwards book was the series of books I used in my undergraduate Calc 1-3 classes.

Quick Summary:
Pros: Good number of exercises, *some* good examples, lots of illustrations, lots of good guidelines and formula sheets.
Cons: Some not-so-great examples, some examples *should* add more algebra steps, 3 editions in 7 years necessary, cost of book-per-class versus 3-set volume is absurd.

Full Review:
All in all I think this book was pretty good through the year and a half run I had for calculus 1-3, and the last two-three years since then when I have tutored the subjects.

If you need a book with a TON of good exercise sets, this book works well. There's A LOT of problems in each section, and most of the time the instructions clearly state what needs to be done, and what concept is being used. There are times that notation or instructions seem a bit obfuscated, however infrequent it may be.

As for examples... most examples are good if you have a firm grasp of algebraic skills. Unfortunately, if you are rusty or not on par with your algebra, many examples can seem painful to understand or navigate. They don't always mention what algebra trick is used, unless the specific section mandates heavy algebra (like the section for Partial Fraction Decomposition as a tool for Integration). This is probably most troubling in the first couple of chapters, since solving most limits involve quite the few algebra tricks. There should at least be a section devoted to an algebra review.

One great pro about the book is that there are plenty of guidelines and formula sheets found in it. You'll find it quite useful to copy them down, or photocopy some of these pages to have a small set of 5-6 pages full of quick reference materials. There are great guidelines on Integration by Parts, as well as Trigonometric Integrals, Series Tests, and the first/last page of the text includes FOUR pages of useful Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus formulas.

The only other complaint that I have is the price tag for the sectioned versions of the book. $150 (on Amazon) for all three sections of Calculus isn't a bad deal. Paying $90-120 for Calc 1, Calc 2, and Calc 3 separately however, is a ripoff. If you are a Math/Engineering student that *knows* you will take all three sections, get this version.

This is also an issue I have to question... why three versions spanning from 2002-2009? It's not unique to this book, as so many books in College Education get "updates" in a 2-3 year period... but one has to question this.

Kindle Version: Not Ready for Prime Time!

I bought the Kindle version of this book because I need a calculus reference to take with me and I don't want to carry another really big book. I have to say that having a text like this in my Kindle is a wonderful thing. I've seen some negative comments about the material in this book. Frankly, I find it to be a very understandable text. I like the author's presentation. So why one star? The formatting of the Kindle version. Wow! I'm reading through the first chapter and there are literally dozens of places where you have a variable name, such as x or y, that is joined to the next word (ex: For the function fdefined...are used instead of x.To evaluate...function was fi rst, etc) On one page the word "nonverticallines" appears twice. Here's one: "...are equivalent because Ll=0." There's no "Ll" anywhere else on the page. What this should have been was delta-x = 0. There are run-together's, misspellings, things left out, incorrect symbols...Again, that's only the first chapter. It's a shame to pay $139.00 and get a mess like this. This one's not ready for prime time.

INNOVATIVE AT THE INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

This review is done from the perspective of one who is either learning or teaching Calculus II and Calculus III. In this volume, Larson and Edwards have laid out elaborate examples in terms of how applications of the integral are carried out. Accompanied with WebAssign, the text information provides three-dimensional modeling such as the highly-enhanced computer graphics that enable one to see how space is occupied not just in the Cartesian (x-y) plane but also the surfaces that require x-y-z coordinates as well as those that entail cylindrical and spherical objects. For instance, in providing examples of the shell method or the method of disks, the instructor can give students an animated visual of the physical attributes described. Those engaged can see the apparatus from virtually all angles, including top view, bottom view, side view, etc. For one from the "old school", this is quite an advancement from the attempted chalkboard drawings of yesteryear; though often reliable, this learning tool could only be displayed on a two-dimensional surface, thus leaving too much to the imagination in regard to the remaining dimension which could not, at the time, be adequately illustrated.

Along with the advantages of the computer software, the exercises contained are numerous and well segued from one mastery level to the next. Having already taught Calculus from other references, I can argue that the changes from topic to topic or problem to problem are better transitioned in the 9th edition of Larson and Edwards than they are in other books. One particular standout is an outlined, shortcut method that might be used for various Integration by Parts exercises and thus drastically cut down on the number of steps that might otherwise be used, especially where repeated Integration by Parts is called for.

After reading the complaints from those in Calculus I, I recommend Silvanus Thompson's classic, Calculus Made Easy, as a cost-effective supplement for learning introductory level derivatives and integrals. So far as the intermediate, undergraduate level Calculus II and III are concerned, Larson and Edwards' work is ideal, for it seems to utilize innovative techniques in a style reminiscent of Thompson.

About the Author
Yukiko Abe Hatasa received her Ph.D. in linguistics in 1992 from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. She has taught all levels of Japanese for over twenty-five years, and has worked on curriculum development and teacher training in five major institutions in the US, Australia, and Japan. She is known nationwide, as one of the premier Japanese methodologists in the US and Japan. She is currently a professor of Japanese pedagogy at Hiroshima University.

Professor Kazumi Hatasa received his Ph.D. in education in 1989 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently a professor at Purdue University and Director of the Japanese School at Middlebury College. He is recognized internationally for his work in software development for the Japanese language and distributes most of his work as freeware over the Internet.

Annie bakes one good cake after another but doesn't discover the right one until she does some research at the library. Finally, Annie produces a birthday cake, and her present to Cora Lee is to call the shop Washington & Merriweather. Annie is an African-American woman with pluck who uses intelligence and kindness to win over a grouchy ghost. Priceman's illustrations are charming, with dashes of color and humor and a sense of action in each one. The art surrounds the text on most pages, causing readers to feel immersed in the plot. I spent three full days on the set of The Bake Shop Ghost film, and it was marvelous. The film was shot on the lot at Universal Studios, and I stayed at the Sheraton Universal City. The window of my room looked down over the studios. One of the producers came and picked me up and we drove into the gates onto James Stewart Blvd, past the bungalow where Alfred Hitchcock had his office.
It was filmed in the section called "New England Village" in a small interior courtyard space. It was crowded with nearly 30 crew members and another dozen people - actors and visitors. It's an indie film, with a small budget, and will be only 15 minutes long, but it was the full Hollywood set - huge lights, cameras, trailer with wardrobe and make-up, a catering crew, trucks with electronic equipment, ladders, and tools, very " young production assistants with headsets, iPhones and water bottles.
I finally got to meet Lorette Bayle, the director who obtained the rights from my publisher. She was the eye of the storm, but was focused and calm. Mostly, I spent time trying to watch as much as possible and stay out of the way.
The level of attention to detail was astonishing - I thought writers were obsessive, but we are amateurs compared to film people. They are extroverted control freaks.
Cakes were important to the story, and there were lots of them. There were at least a dozen fake prop cakes. There were 11 cakes for the tasting scenes, with doubles - yes, the cakes had body doubles. Ed, a lovely man who baked the cakes for the tasting scene, had a great story about the birthday cake. He found a baker who would match the appearance of the birthday cake in the book. The bakery was called Helen's, and was run for 60 years by Helen. She left the business to her helper, who made the cake for the film. He was Filipino, with limited English. When Ed returned for the cake, the baker's wife said they liked the book, and thought it was very true, because she said, "He still talks to Helen." They felt her spirit was still in the shop. This was sweet, but a bit eerie.
There was a great deal of specialized equipment on the set - the one that struck me the most was the make-up belt, which had a pouch with pockets for brushes, pots of powder, mascara and foundation.
I realized that patience is an important quality in an actor, as they waited for sets to be arranged, lighting to be adjusted, and then repeated the same lines over and over. Maryann Jean Baptiste, who played Annie, was pelted with puff pastry at least six times during the fight sequence. They shot the flour fight just once, with three cameras, to minimize getting flour into expensive equipment. It was a grand fight, and everyone watching burst into applause at the end.
People were very kind, to me and to each other. If I was standing for more than a minute, a production assistant would bring me a director's chair. One of the producers kept feeding me. The mood was lovely- a group that seemed to enjoy working on the project and with each other. I'm very impressed with Lorette's leadership skills, that she gathered such a group, and kept them working together so well.

I spent a lot of time in the area they called "video village." This was where a video monitor that was connected with the camera was set up and the script supervisor, Ron, had a small table and chair. Ron was making elaborate notations on the script, noting each shot, each take, what reel of film was used, a string of numbers I never did understand. This was so the editor and director could identify each segment of film during the editing process. Some scenes had over twenty shots, from different angles, with several takes. It could take a couple of hours to shoot one page of script.
Ron seemed to like me, and kept urging me to write a screenplay. His point was that I had a film in production now, based on my work, so I had an edge over lots of other writers. He told me where the bookstore was with the best books about screenwriting, and tips about writing.
The actors were marvelous. They really embodied the characters that I had imagined in a wonderful way. For me, the most emotional moment was when they were improvising on a scene where the ghost is advising Annie about her recipes. I found myself tearing up, because it was how I had imagined these characters relating to each other, even though I didn't write it into the story. The ways that the film picked up and amplified things about the story that I had thought, but not written was amazing and a bit spooky.
As to the pictures - the one where I am with the bakers is not blurry due to a mistake. There was a fog machine going for that shot, not to make it spooky, but to soften the light. Lorette assured me that it doesn't show on the film. The set interior shows how crowded it got when the camera was rolling and the one with Kathy, the ghost, shows how much care went into the props and set design.
The next phase is editing and there should be a final cut in about six months. Then Lorette will submit it to film festivals and we'll see where it ends up showing. She said she would send it to Sundance, although she didn't think it was edgy enough for that festival. But she thought that if there was a full-length film with a similar theme or setting, that they would pick BSG to pair with it.
It was a marvelous adventure, and I feel so lucky to have had the experience.cheers,

A Must Read for Children

A spooky tale about a deceased bake shop owner who haunts her beloved bake shop in order to scare away new bakers.

When a bake shop owner, Cora Lee Merriweather, dies, people do not grieve until they realize that "all those luscious desserts were now only sweet memories." Now new bakers want to take over the shop and one by one they are frightened away by Cora Lee's ghost. It is not until Annie Washington arrived at the shop that Cora Lee meets her match. Annie's determination is evident when she shows up at the bake shop night after night to triumph over the unwelcoming ghost. What is remarkable about this story is the way in which the author concludes the book. Given an ultimatum to bake the ghost a cake which will bring tears to her eyes, Annie outwits the menacing ghost in a most endearing way.

This story is not only going to engage kiddos, but can also be used to teach objectives in the classroom. As a 4th grade elementary teacher, I recommend this book to use for teaching the following: figurative language, characterization, plot and sequence, internal consistency, and theme (determination, fear, problem solving, unlikely friendships). Context clues is also an option with this book as there are some big vocabulary words (i.e. flummoxed, bland, sly). In writing, you could discuss word choice and make graphic organizers with words having to do with food or baking.

Wonderful Illustrations and Story

This one is a true gem! The drawings are fluid and very distinctive, with the storyline about how a ghost mystery is solved. However, I think this would be okay for most children over the age of 4 or so, it's not a terribly scary ghost story. It's more a story of understanding where angry emotions might come from, and the importance of being strong, smart and kind, as the brave baker is when she both stands up to the ghost but also makes an effort to understand her by doing some research (after other bakers have fled the haunted bakery in fear). The fact that the baker is both black and female is not part to the storyline, but will be noted by those who appreciate strong, positive images of non-white or female characters in the books they read to their children.

This would be a great story for teachers, librarians, or parents to read aloud, and it even comes with a "ghost-pleasing" cake recipe. Highly recommended!

Based on the Peterson Field Guide to Birds of North America (2008), this new edition of the original regional guide (2002) brings the same improvements and corrections to maps, taxonomy, and paintings. Peterson Field Guides are best for beginning to intermediate birders and are, as always, wonderful for teachers and trip leaders. The 2010 volumes (that is, this title and the fourth edition of Peterson Field Guide to Birds of Western North America) are simply subsets of the 2008 comprehensive volume, and as such contain no new information. Still a great guide, but losing ground

I really wish I could agree with the glowing reviews given by others, but I can't, at least in some respects. I grew up with the original Peterson field guide, and it was my parents' bible. The revisions over the years greatly enhanced the original material. I doubt there is a "seasoned" birder out there who would not say that the Peterson guides are responsible to a great extent for their love of birding.
As soon as They were available I signed up for the pre-order of both the eastern and western editions. I have had them now for around 5 months, and they have never left the house. I can only really comment on the eastern edition, because I never had a previous western ed., but I assume this applies to both.
The book's content is at least 95% the same as the previous edition. I have spotted an added picture or two, but not many. Colors have been changed slightly, but I am not sure that they are better, and it may just be the printing process. The text is updated to agree with current information, bird names, etc., but I haven't noticed much else. In that the pictures and information in the guides has always been excellent, all well and good.
The complaint I have is that the book is just no longer a FIELD GUIDE to me, as past editions were. It is thicker, somewhat heavier, and for a very poor reason, in my estimation. The difference is primarily in the back section of range maps, which has almost doubled in size. It takes up roughly 1/4 of the total size of the book. Now, we all refer to a range map from time to time, but I would bet its something like 1 in 300 times we use the book. Beyond that, the regular pages have smaller maps for the birds which suffice very well at least 95% of the time. To waste all that space and weight is ridiculous. If it is necessary to include all those large maps, I suggest they should be published separately and packaged with the guides, letting the user decide whether or not to carry them. I'm betting not 1/10 of 1% would. The old guide slid nicely into a pocket of my field pants. I won't be doing that with the new one, I'd be afraid it would rip the pocket out, if I could get it in at all. The newest National Geo. guides are top notch, and they are smaller, thinner, and lighter than Peterson, as are others. The "big Sibley" has become the bible for most birders, although mine will never leave the house or car because of size, so that leaves out the new Peterson from any primarly use other than possibly the "bird feeder birder". My feeling is, the people at Peterson "just don't get it" as far as their niche in the guide book business goes. I feel guilty for being a detractor of this "new standard", but I would feel more guilty if I did not.

Peterson is still the best for bird ID!

Sure there is lots more competition from other bird books now; but for ID of birds Peterson is still the best! The use of "points of emphasis" drawings to distinguish what makes a species different is still the best technique and biggest help - even for experienced birders (and I fit this category knowing warblers by their song). Do not go with books that use photographs whatever you do - birds just do not look like the photo in real life; as there is significant variation by bird. But a few characteristics are prominent on all birds of the same species - thus, Peterson drawings emphasizing these prominent points are the most helpful approach. Also, do not try to make a reference book with more info into a "field guide" for ID - too much info is bulky and confusing and harder to reference "in the field". RTP is still King and his legacy lives on...

Best Bird Book

I have or have had, most all of the North American Bird Field Guides available and still I keep coming back to the Peterson for several reasons. First is the quality of the artwork. The birds look much more natural and the colors are way more accurate than in either Sibley or National Geographic. I don't like the flat 2-D presentations in either of those guides. And, personally, I just do not like the photographic guides as lighting, etc. can play tricks and make the birds look different than they really are. If I want the challenge of identifying badly lit birds then I go to the Crossley which really isn't a field guide but a great book to learn from. The Peterson is the only book with thumbnail maps for a quick peek in the field, to rule a species in or out, as well as large detailed maps in the back for close examination if necessary. I find myself going to the rear maps very frequently as I travel looking for where birds are. The notes that accompany each species are a wealth of information, not just a rehash of the features that are visualized in the picture. Sibley and Nat Geo both have more extensive entries for Gulls and Hawks and I do refer to them if I am at the coast or wanting to know about a western species, however, the Peterson is still overall the best for eastern birding in my opinion. The front matter and various learning pages sprinkled throughout the book are great for beginning birders. This particular edition is really nice because it isn't so huge that lugging it into the field is a chore. Also, many species vary from coast to coast and with this guide you are sure that you are seeing the eastern version of the bird - think Fox Sparrow. All and all the best bird book for beginner through advanced birder.
