Braving the deadly breakers at Magic Crescent Cove so she can see the mysterious figure again, she wipes out and nearly drowns, but the mermaid saves her and slips a small gold key in her hand. She is an excellent swimmer, though, and while spending time at the local beach, she begins to think she might be seeing a mermaid out in the waves. Being a practical girl, this of course strikes her as unlikely, but a host of subtle clues that include the discovery of her mother’s true identity and fate lead her to an undersea world of mer-folk. Lena distances herself from her life on land as she takes up residence in her mother’s community below the ocean, but eventually she must choose between her diverging destinies. Madigan does a stellar job of bringing readers inexorably from what at first seems like a realistic problem-novel plot of family issues to an enjoyable fantasy of a girl who finds that she is only half human. The characters, whether teen, child, or adult, are well-rounded and integrated into the plot. In addition to her parents, Lena must also consider the sensibilities of her younger brother and her best friend and figure out how she feels about her two boyfriends, one human and one mer. Mermaids taking over the YA paranormal world of vamps and weres.

There's something drawing Lena to the water.
It's making Lena sleepwalk to the beach.
It's compelling her to surf even if it means putting herself in grave danger
and going against her father's wishes.
A woman emerges from the waves--a woman with a silvery tail.
She has a message.
She has a key
When Lena finds a brown leather sea chest and uses the key to unlock it, she has no choice but to look into the watery depths of her secret past through the mysterious mermaid's mirror . . .
Lena's life will never be the same.
This book started out pretty much the same way a lot of YA books do. Her parents don't understand her and she feels like a fish out of water, literally. Then she discovers that she's different from everyone else (big surprise) and sets out to discover what her heritage is really about. Though the first part of the book was a bit slow, once the Merpeople took over; the story became more of a fantasy read. Madigan did a credible job of building this world under the sea and I think it will greatly appeal to middle schoolers. I see mermaids taking over the YA paranormal world of vamps and weres. The use of the mirror added a different slant to the story but it could have been used more to help us understand this new world and the history behind it.
Lena was pretty much the typical teenager, whiny and constantly lying and hiding things from her parents. She does tend to face things head on and with a lot of courage, though. I saw that there was to be a sequel which I hope will flesh out parts of the story that were rather lacking. This light summer read will bring memories of sand and salt water with every flip of the page for the reader, both young and old alike.

Deeeeelightful storytelling - a new twist on a mermaid story!

Like any typical teenager, Lena can't figure out what her dad's problem is. More specifically, what her dad's problem is with letting her surf. She lives in a coastal town in Northern California, all her friends are doing it, and the sea calls to her. Like, it really and truly calls her name. So, what gives, Pops?
It's only when Lena begins to unravel the secrets of her family that she begins to understand who she is and why her dad is so protective. Her history and her identity are all wrapped up in what she overheard her stepmother saying, what her dad is not saying, but most of all, her deep connection to the ocean.
When Lena decides to do a little digging of her own, she finds artifacts of her mother, who died when she was young...or so she was told. The artifacts tell another story, and Lena is determined to piece together the clues to solve the mystery of who she is and where she comes from.
To tell you more would be to give away the absolute gem of this book, and I think each reader needs to be surprised and delighted, as I was when I dove into Madigan's storytelling.
You won't be disappointed, as Madigan tells a story that will make you want to read late into the night.

Not the best Mermaid's Story

The Story: A girl who has felt a deep connection with the sea finds herself restricted by her father's fear over a mysterious accident.
I am a big fan of mermaids, I always found them enthralling so I was very excited when I got this book.
But I must admit it was very clichéish at times.
The Mermaid's Mirror is a great book for sea lovers and it's about a girls decision. I had great fun reading it, although not a huge fan of how things ended up.
Complain: I did not believed how fast love developed between the main character and another character, but it was believable enough to make us want to read more.
Overall, the Mermaid's book was not a great book, but a good one and a quick, nice read. And I sure hope there's a sequel to wrap things up.
