French 101 Textbook

A good book, easy to follow with summaries on each chapter so you can revise easily. Tables at the back for verbs and a French-English, English-French dictionary section (that only defines vocab in the text). The great advantage to this book is that it has a website with links to flash cards and practice exams etc. which is excellent and a great way to study for tests and exams. Colorful book easy to follow with tidbits in the margins such as active vocabulary, cultural notes, although it does cover these in larger sections also. I recommend purchasing the workbook as well, and do all of the excercises in there to learn too. The workbook was required as part of my college class and all homework is being assigned from that. I haven't listened to the CD yet, but will today for the first time.

This book is very well put together, it makes learning french easy and fun :) .The "In text audio CD" is invaluable. If your book doesn't come with it, I STRONGLY suggest you purchase it seperately.

The only book I would burn if I could

I have taught with many different textbooks over the years, and this one is by far my least favorite. It would be better for an advanced group, but it is terrible for beginners (however this book is supposed to be for beginning French!). There are very few grammatical explanations in the text, and there are not many activities to put those explanations into practice. The students are supposed to magically learn the structures by reading the conversations. In my opinion this method does not work unless the student is in a full-immersion setting. In the chapters, one section may cover reflexive verbs (which the authors explain in about a paragraph), but then these verbs are not mentioned again anywhere in the rest of the chapter. Instead it switches abruptly to another structure. The testing program is not great, as the tests are 12-13 pages long and they are very difficult. Some of the listening exercises on the testing program are three to four minutes long - too long for beginners to grasp what is being said. The point value is also strange - 79 points instead of 100 points for example. A section that has about 10 blanks may be worth 7 points. I am in a teaching setting where I cannot make changes to the tests myself, or else I would do so. The videos are really outdated (they are still using French francs in them). The listening sections in the book are not much better - they are lengthy and fast. As I said above, fine for more advanced speakers but not good for beginners. I really like the cultural and literary parts of the text, yet they would also be more beneficial for intermediate speakers. One could easily spend three weeks on each chapter which would make it easier - but most of us professors do not have that luxury. In short, if you are someone who is able to choose his/her own text, I would think twice about ordering this one unless you are teaching a higher level of French.
