An elegant, heartwarming story about the profound connections between people and animals
In the winter of 1917, nineteen-year-old Martha Lessen saddles her horses and heads for a remote county in eastern Oregon, looking for work “gentling” wild horses. She chances on a rancher, George Bliss, who is willing to hire her on. Many of his regular hands are off fighting the war, and he glimpses, beneath her showy rodeo garb, a shy but strong-willed girl with a serious knowledge of horses. So begins the irresistible tale of a young but determined woman trying to make a go of it in a man’s world. Over the course of several long, hard winter months, many of the townsfolk witness Martha talking in low, sweet tones to horses believed beyond repair—getting miraculous, almost immediate results. It's with this gift that she earns their respect, and a chance to make herself a home.

Gloss's austere latest (after Wild Life) features a wandering taciturn tomboy who finds her place in rural Oregon while the men are away at war. After she leaves home in 1917, 19-year-old Martha Lessen plans to travel from farm to farm in Elwha County, Oregon, breaking horses left behind by owners away fighting. She winds up in small town Shelby, where farmers George and Louise Bliss convince her to stay the winter with them after she domesticates their broncos with soft words and songs instead of lariats and hobbles. While breaking the town's horses, Martha meets a slovenly drunk, a clan of Western European immigrants and two unmarried sisters running a ranch with the help of an awkward, secretive teenager. When Martha's not making the rounds or riding through the Clarks Range, Louise tries her hand at socializing (or, perhaps, breaking) her, but Martha chafes at town dances, social outings and Louise's hand-me-down church dresses. Gloss's narrative is sometimes as slow as Martha's progress with the more recalcitrant beasts, but following stubborn, uncompromising Martha as she goes about her work provides its own unique pleasures. Molly Gloss’s affecting fourth novel turns the Western genre on its head with a woman as the mysterious stranger appearing on horseback, but Gloss is known for her independent, self-sufficient heroines. The Hearts of Horses is perhaps the most sentimental of all her works. Though the plot is more a collection of linked stories than a single, continuous narrative—a stylistic technique that most reviewers commented on but did not criticize—Gloss’s simple, unadorned prose and stark portrayal of the West during the first two decades of the 20th century create a moving, wistful memorial to a lost way of life. Shy, self-effacing Martha captivates her fellow humans in much the same way she charms wayward horses. Only USA Today suggested that the story lacks a certain warmth. However, Martha will no doubt beguile most readers.

A female broncobuster? It seems doubtful, but with most of the able-bodied men off fighting in World War I, Oregon rancher George Bliss decides to take a chance on Martha Lessen. Barely 19 years old, Martha has three times the natural horse sense as more seasoned wranglers. With a talent for breaking horses to saddle in a uniquely gentle way, she soon proves herself in a man's world, becoming an indispensable part of the fabric of the community in the meantime. Martha's tail end of the frontier adventures is chronicled in a delightfully down-home, matter-of-fact voice by the author of The Jump-Off Creek (1989). Flanagan, Margaret

This is one of the most beautifully written novels you will read
By BiCoastalBookWorm
This is one of the most beautifully written novels you will read. I was heartbroken when it came to an end. She captures a time, a place and a group of people so utterly....the reader feels as if she has gone back in time. Great gift for friends who love horses, history, stories about the remarkable things that happen to "ordinary" people, or those who just love a beautiful piece of clear and evocative, magical writing.

Outstanding character-driven novel
By Ruth Sims
When I was a kid I read every horse story in print and I remember especially Black Beauty (of course) and the books of Will James. Hearts of Horses is the same kind of book. The language is as simple as a pair of leather chaps, and the lead character of Martha is as quiet and soft-spoken, determined and brave, as any character Jimmy Stewart ever played--and almost as tall. It's a Western, but not a bang-bang shoot-em-up Western. It's about a young woman (though she's constantly and a little annoyingly always referred to as a girl) who asks for no special treatment, intrudes on no one, and makes her own way by doing what she does best--gentling and training horses. The author writes with the same quiet authority with which Martha trains her horses. It's a wonderful book.

A Gentle Horse Gentler
By Judy L.
From the moment this shy, young woman beds down in a horse barn and rearranges a tack room into sleeping quarters, I was hooked. I was captivated by the author's description of Martha's determination to gentle horses rather than the usual way, of wrestling, bucking and pretty much breaking the animal's spirit in order to ride it. I loved how the author found a way to entertwine the lives of the animals and people and her descriptions of the early 20th century life in rural Oregon when so many families were enduring hardships, and what it means for a young woman to do a man's work. I found the book hard to put down and was compelled to order a copy for a friend.
