Kindergarten-Grade 4–Lula McLean lived on a plantation in Virginia, near Bull Run Creek, with her family and her beloved rag doll. When she was four years old, the Civil War began. General Beauregard moved into her house, using it as his headquarters, and the peaceful fields were turned into a military camp. That summer, when the fighting drew too close, Lula's father relocated the family to the town of Appomattox Court House. On April 9, 1865, General Lee and General Grant met in the McLean home to negotiate the surrender of the Confederacy. Lula was playing in the parlor when the men arrived, and she "fled the room, leaving her rag doll on the horsehair sofa." Soldiers called it "the silent witness." Although Lula never saw her doll again, it still exists and is now on display at the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park. Friedman's economical text clearly shows how the Civil War touched the life of a young child. The watercolor-and-gauche illustrations and folk-art style add a sense of comfort to the turmoil and destruction of the war. Robin Friedman is an advertising copywriter and freelance writer for several newspapers and magazines in New Jersey. The Silent Witness is her first children’s book with Houghton Mifflin.
Ms. Nivola has written and illustrated several children’s books, including Planting the Trees of Kenya. She lives with her family in Newton, Massachusetts.

Excellent civil war story for children.

This book takes one story of the Civil War and puts it into a child's perspective. If you are a civil war buff, this book is perfect to share with your child or grandchild. The story is very well written, from a child's viewpoint, and the pictures are delightful. I bought this for my friend to share with his young granddaughter and they both thoroughly enjoyed the book. It prompted her to ask Grandpa more questions about a subject he loves to talk about! The book arrived in excellent condition. I highly recommend this book for folks who enjoy stories of this era to share with a special child.

Beautiful story, lovely illustrations, sloppy history

I have been to Appomattox and seen the recreated rag doll that has been dubbed the Silent Witness sitting in the parlor and I am fascinated by the McLean family story. I wanted to love this book, but it started right off with a factual error and then continued with a few more.
1. It claims that the Confederacy was made up of 13 states. That is not true. 11 states seceded (SC, NC, VA, FL, GA, MS, AL,AR, TN, LA AND TX). I have no idea what other two states the author thinks comprised the Confederacy.
2. The author claims that the North wanted to abolish slavery. This is not true at the outset of the war and emancipation only became a war goal in 1863 (technically in 1862 after the Battle of Antietam when Lincoln issued his Preliminary Emancipation Procalmation that was to go into effect January 1, 1863). It's goal at the outset was the preservation of the Union. The stated goal of Lincoln's Republican Party was simply to stop expansion of slavery in the territories not to eliminate it where it existed.
3. There were two tables used in the surrender, one used by Grant the other by Lee. Sheridan (and later, Abby Custer) had the one Grant used. Union General Ord had the one used by Lee.
Now, this is a children's picture book, so I understand not getting into great depth about complex issues like the causation of the war--a topic that still results in heated debates among adults. But one would think that factual information easily checked (the number of Confederate states, for example) would be right. It is just sloppy writing and editing.
I also find the inclusion of Gettysburg and the March to the Sea to be incongruent and they interrupt the flow of the story. It would have been a better tale to tell how the two armies arrived in Appomattox Court House (Richmond and Petersburg fell, the Confedrates retreated toward their only lifeline, but the government hadn't sent the right supplies on the trains). Maybe the reason the author choose the episodes she did is illustrative of her bias (people still think Sherman a devil), but I rather think that she simply isn't really knowledgeable about her subject (did I mention the incorrect accounting of the number of Confederate states?).
The illustrations are beautiful and I like the idea of the book, which is why I gave it 3 stars.

Great Book

I teach 2nd grade and love reading this book at the end of our Civil War unit. Students find it interesting that many items from the house are taken as souvenirs. The kids get to make their own rag dolls after we read it together.
